CPYGN will gather in MSC conference room 3D at 11am today to participate in the Nuclear Advocacy Network’s webinar on Nuclear Advocacy. Bring your lunch and join us to learn more about what it means to be an advocate for nuclear energy!
As nuclear energy professionals, you have an opportunity to be an advocate for nuclear energy not just by reaching out to policy makers, but even in your everyday interactions with community members. It is important for us to exercise our ability to be ambassadors for our industry in today’s environment, where policy-makers and voters may have a significant impact on the future energy industry.
Attending this webinar should help us better understand how to develop into advocates for our industry. Another very easy way to be an advocate is to sign up with the Nuclear Advocacy Network. Your profile will identify who your Congressmen/women or House Representative are, and when there are local or national policies affecting the nuclear industry, you receive an Action Alert email. This email contains a link to the bill, a summary of the intent and impact, and a link to a letter to your policy maker. This letter can be sent as-is by pushing one button, or you can take the time to edit the letter to personalize it before sending. Please consider attending this webinar and participating in this minimal-effort way of reaching our legislators.
Congratulations to 2015 CPYGN Chapter Vice President, Lily Raabe, on winning a national Excellence Award for “exceptional management interface and leadership, committed service, and enthusiasm.”
CPYGN couldn’t be happier for Lily and all of her incredible accomplishments, and going above and beyond for NAYGN in every capacity. From tours, to professional development, to event planning, Lily deserves full recognition for her constant hard work. Thank you for being such a wonderful chapter Vice President!
Don’t forget: this coming Wednesday, July 15th nearly 60 Women in Nuclear 2015 conference members will be visiting CPNPP! Additional tour guides are still being requested. Contact lauren.neuburger@luminant.com if you’re available and interested.
CPYGN could not be more proud of its Energy Interns! Welcome and welcome back to the Peak, summer engineering interns! Check out #energyintern on Instagram for more shots of our whole team of Luminant interns at work.
Congratulations to CPYGN Chapter President, Lauren Neuburger, for winning the 2015 Future Award for her work as the national Recruiting and Retention (R&R) Committee Lead! Her work in developing The Focus, a nationally-distributed best practices newsletter that shares the stories of successful NAYGN Core members and Chapters, earned her recognition at the National Professional Development Conference in Washington D.C. this May.

Ever wonder what it’s like reaching out to over 43,000 people in one fell swoop? Try asking 2015 CPYGN Vice President Lily Raabe. Her last post on the US Women in Nuclear Facebook group received over 2,000 likes, comments, and shares on the article Radiation in Perspective. Way to spread some nuclear knowledge, Lily!
On March 26th, Texas A&M Nuclear Engineering students visited Luminant’s Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant to tour the Control Room Simulator, Spent Fuel Pools, and Turbine Building, led by volunteer members of CPYGN.
CPYGN Vice President Lily Raabe said this after their visit, “I have received a lot of positive feedback from the students, ranging from comments on how accommodating and friendly Comanche Peak personnel were, to enthusiasm about what they were able to see. Several commented on how this tour gave them a new perspective on everything they have spent the past 3.5 years studying as nuclear engineering students, and how the tour made some things they have learned “click.””
Two weeks later on April 9th, out-of-state visitors from the Texas A&M hosted American Nuclear Society (ANS) Conference visited the Control Room Simulator and Unit 1 Turbine Building.
Special thanks to tour guides and/or simulator instructors Lily Raabe, Chris Carver, Cameron Singleton, Cody Lemons, Trent Poynor, Kristina Blackwell, Lauren Neuburger, Coy Rice, Jack Wise, Garry Struble, Carlos Navas, David Goodman, and multiple Security and Radiation Protection personnel who provided exemplary support for the tours.

Five CPYGN members visited Granbury’s Crossland Ninth Grade Center for its annual Career Day to discuss engineering as a viable career path. Robert Marquez (Emergency Planning), David Whitsitt (Project Engineering – Plant Computer System Upgrade), Kristina Blackwell (Design Engineering – Instrumentation and Controls/Electrical), Chris Carver (Systems Engineering – Electrical), and Lauren Neuburger (Design Engineering – Mechanical/Nuclear) presented to over 100 ninth grade students over the course of their lecture, providing examples of various engineering sub-specialties followed by a Q&A about engineering and nuclear power for each class.
