Ultra Electronics Tour

Last Thursday, CPYGN had the pleasure of leading a Comanche Peak plant tour for Ultra Electronics, a manufacturer of Weed Instrument brand sensors and instrumentation equipment.  After reaching out to current president Chris Carver, fellow NAYGN member Rich Heibel of Ultra helped organize an informative visit to the nuclear power plant for himself and thirteen colleagues.

Rich Heibel, an Ultra Electronics Engineer and member of NAYGN, notices what was supposed to be a candid photograph in the Turbine Building while Chris Carver leads the tour. Meanwhile, Joe Thomas admires his engineering handiwork in the overhead.

Ultra Electronics engineers learn about the fish in Squaw Creek Reservoir at the CPNPP Visitors’ Center. Turns out there are no Great White Sharks in Glen Rose, TX.

Volunteers Wanted!

On May 5-6 and 14-15, groups of local middle school students will be coming to the CPNPP Visitors’ Center to learn about nuclear. They’ll be split into two groups each day so that one section can watch an informative video while the other section learns to dress out and use our detectors. We need some volunteers to assist each day, so please contact Lauren Neuburger or Chris Carver if interested. You can find more information in an email from Angela Riley sent 04/22/14.

Crystal River Closes

When nuclear plants have closed elsewhere, locals have cheered. But in Citrus County, it’s been more like a death in the family.

Crystal River Nuclear Plant Closing

Duke Energy announced in early February that closing Crystal River Nuclear Power Plant was more cost effective than attempting to repair the cracked containment structure.

“For more than 40 years, the county’s main economic engine was the nuclear plant. Outside the gates of the Crystal River facility, you can still see steam rising — but that’s from coal-fired power plants. The company that owned the nuclear plant, Progress Energy, messed up in a big way. In an effort to upgrade the plant’s steam turbines, company employees cracked the reactor’s containment building. When they tried to fix it, they cracked it again. Now, the plant’s owners are saying they’ve decided to shut it down for good.”
